Winter Park Hotels
Nestled on the western slope of the Continental Divide, Winter Park, Colorado is a unique vacation destination offering some of the best winter sport opportunities found in the Rocky Mountains. But not just a wintertime destination, over the years Winter Park has evolved into a year-round attraction. Commonly known for their hospitality, Winter Park hotels are thoroughly accommodating and provide for a plush stay in a beautiful mountain hideaway. No matter what brings someone to Winter Park, it is certain their time spent will be much enjoyed.
Just a short 90-minute drive west of Denver’s city limits, Winter Park is a vibrant mountain hotspot secluded in the Rockies. Commonly known as “Colorado’s highest,” the village lays claim to having the highest elevation of any incorporated town in the United States at 12,060. First beginning as a collection of settlements brought on by the construction of the Moffat Tunnel, a local merchant named “Doc” Graves first developed the site with 26 tourist cabins, a café and service station. Having the foresight to power his buildings by water wheel at the nearby Vasquez Creek, Grave enjoyed a rare economic prosperity during the Great Depression years. As buzz grew, the Winter Park Ski Resort first opened its doors to visitors in 1939. Composed of three interconnected peaks – Winter Park, Mary Jane and Vasquez Ridge – the resort enjoyed years of successful seasons and became world-renowned for its skiing opportunities. Despite its winter sport popularity, Winter Park was not officially founded until August 1, 1978.
Though widely known for its skiing, Winter Park has evolved into what is regarded as a year-round destination. Set in the shadow of the Rockies, visitors enjoy capturing the breathtaking sites while exploring what seem to be endless miles of hiking trails and mountain bike paths. Others get an intimate nature experience as they wade through crystal clear streams, casting a whirling fly rod in hopes of landing that trophy rainbow trout. The town center has much to offer as well with its numerous specialty shops and windows filled with handcrafted southwestern jewelry and Native American Artworks. The locals host various outdoor concerts and festivals as well – including the Snow Mountain Disc Golf tournament that goes on every year.
For years now, visitors have found their way to this unique and wondrous mountain hideaway. Whether it’s the inviting Winter Park hotels or pure beauty of the natural surroundings, it’s no secret that many enjoy the comforts that are found in this mountain escape. Winter Park, Colorado is an experience that should be enjoyed by all.
