Chandler was founded in 1891 by Arizona's first veterinary surgeon, Alexander John Chandler. The city has come a long way since Dr. Chandler first settled here, now hosting a population of over 220,000. Originally, Chandler real estate was supported by an agrarian economy with cotton and other plants supplying much of the area's wealth. This holds true even now to some extent, however the area has diversified and is now home to a thriving electronics economy.
Chandler is also home to the famous "San Marcos Hotel," a historic residence that dates back to 1913. The San Marcos was the first golf resort in Arizona, and was named for the hotel, which was one of the building blocks of this community.
Historically, a significant part of Chandler real estate was dedicated to Ostrich Farming, which is why we have the famous annual Chandler Ostrich Festival. You might remember that this festival served as backdrop for the 1995 film Waiting to Exhale.
